These sound familiar
This site is hilarious. I heard plenty of these back in college when I did my time working at the
CC-Emu Computer Lab as a lab tech at the University of Oregon, and have even heard some from clients in more recent times.
These are my favorites : "We love it like this, but we were wondering if we could change the font, the color, and move a few things around?"
"I need more pesshht peesshht chuttt chutt papapapa on this animation."
"Please change the "SUBMIT" button to "DONE". Submit sounds too kinky."
"We want it to be black, but could you not make it so dark?"
"Just because we signed off on the proof doesn't mean we were happy with it!"
"Can you do it like in the Matrix...you know with numbers, zeros and ones, and glowing light, like in the Matrix, you know?"
"Can you print out a copy of every page in the website and post it to us? We need to fax a copy to our US office so they can have a look at it..."
Me: So who will go to this site and for what reason?
Client: I don't know
Me: Well what is the purpose of this site!?!?
Client: I don't know
"Um, could you make it more... i don't know... enhanced?"
"Can you make the background constantly change colors? I want people to know that we are fun and exciting."
"Don't use too much red, our tests show that red downloads slower."

Week 20
We've made it to the 20th week!
ETA has been changed to Sept 10th, 2005.
Our families and friends have been amazing in their support for us -- we hope these pictures give them the same excitement it gave us.
Seriously, Kayla was totally waving at us through the whole ultrasound, and moving about.
Such a genius already.
Look at that noggin. I think she was studying for the LSATs in there. Brilliant.
1. Head / Brain Shot
2. Shows ribs, arms, and Spinal Cord
3. Same as above
4. On right you can see a foot and in the middle an arm sticking up and waving
5. Another angle of 2

Booze is not your friend
Despite many studies over the years showing the health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption, researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say
the booze is not your friend:
They found that the nondrinkers had many more risks for heart disease - such as being overweight, inactive, high blood pressure and diabetes -- than the moderate drinkers.
Based on those results, the agency still could not say that moderate drinking actually was a factor in reducing the risk of heart disease...
"We're feeling the pendulum has swung way too far and Americans are getting sort of the wrong idea" on alcohol, said the study's lead author, Dr. Tim Naimi of the CDC's chronic diseases division. "The science around moderate drinking is very murky."
Moderate drinkers tended to be in better health, better educated, wealthier and more active than their nondrinking counterparts, and that likely influenced their lower risk of heart disease, the study said.
"It appears that moderate drinkers have many social and lifestyle characteristics that favor their survival over nondrinkers and few of these differences are likely due to alcohol consumption itself," the study said.
Okay, so let's see if I understand this:
1. Moderate drinkers have healthier lifestyles than nondrinkers.
2. The fact they drink has nothing to do with it.
Possible disconnect there? How does that make any sense at all?
Isn't it possible that moderate drinking helps reduce stress?
Isn't it possible that the socializing that accompanies moderate drinking leads to greater career opportunities, and thus better income?
Isn't it possible that people who don't drink feel more tempted to overindulge in the foods that make them fat?
Isn't it possible that the metabolic effects of alcohol (processing it burns more calories than does digestion of any other type of food or beverage) help moderate drinkers maintain their weight?
Something tells me that this research won't pass the test of time.

Its a Girl!
So we went to the doctor's office today for our all important meeting with the "Ultrasound Technician".
After getting some crazy static filled images of a foot, head, spinal cord (i'll scan them later), the technician said she is "pretty sure" its a girl.
I asked how sure, and she said 99%. So we'll see. Her explaination when I asked her why only "pretty sure"? "I didn't see a pee-pee".
I swear, I told her, "no-no, check again".
heh.

I think if you're drunk enough to

Baseball Season Has Begun!
After not missing a single game yet, I honestly think the Angels are lookin’ great. I kinda still wish we had Glaus at third, and Eckstein at Shortstop, and Percy in the bullpen as a backup just in case, but meh, overall i'm pretty happy. Wash has even had a good start this season!
As far as the new guys - O-cab still has to prove himself to me, but I'm actually pretty happy with Old Man Finley already. He has some hustle left in him.
I can't stand Lackey though. I think the Angels have a good chance of winning if their starting pitching gets better...
In keeping with the spirit of my sports related posts (like my bad KC Chiefs prediction), I’ll make my first “Bold Prediction” of the season right now. Here we go - Angels will take AL West again. There. I said it. Forever posted on the internet. ha!
Anywho. In the National League, I root for the Doyers.

Anyone wanna buy black market remotes?
So I decided recently that we needed Tivo (DVR), and Fox Sports Northwest (for Duck Football of course).
I called up Time Warner, and they said we were all set to go, and we needed to pick up our new Tivo box at our nearest Time Warner store, and turn in our current box. Upon arrival, I traded in our current box and remote, and received 2 boxfulls of stuff to take home and install.
Once home, I opened the box to find everything I needed... except a remote! I immediately called Time Warner to complain and ask about my missing remote.
After the obligatory 20 minute hold to speak to a representative, and security questions to access my account, the lady on the phone stated "oh yes, Mr. Kanaly, it says here you took posession of said Tivo box, and the Remote at 5:30pm".
My response was "But I didnt get a remote!", and her response was "you needed to explain that to them when you picked up the tivo box" ??? What a cyclical conversation that was.
After about 20 more minutes of this banter and me stating over and over that I hadn't gotten a remote, I finally asked to speak to a manager. The only way I could get my point across that I didn't get a remote in the first place was to ask him if this is what he thought I did for a living -- sign up for tivo, and steal the remotes.
I assured him the market for pilfered remotes wasnt great enough for me to bother.
Finally after enough arguing they have agreed to give us a remote.
Grrr!

Mercury Rising
This is scary, Thanks to Lou for this one...
So, how much sushi and fish can you eat before the mercury starts lowering your IQ? Turns out, according to this Slate article by Amanda Schaffer, there's
no easy answer.
The bottom line:
The apparent trade-offs are not as stark as they seem. Fortunately the kinds of fish that are highest in mercury are not necessarily the same as those that are highest in heart-protective fatty acids.
Swordfish, for instance, is high in mercury but low in omega-3s. Salmon, on the other hand, is high in omega-3s but low in mercury. In other words, a savvy consumer can ometimes have the best of both worlds -- choosing heart-healthy fish without piling p a plate of mercury. (The issue is more complicated for other toxins, such as PCBs, hich do tend to be higher in the fatty fish that are high in omega-3s.)
New research has also shown that mercury itself can increase an adult's risk of heart disease. The toxin's presence, then, may actually undermine the cardio benefits of omega-3s -- which would mean that too much fish really is too much.
Got that? If you eat a lot of fish like me, click through to the story and check out the links, which include a
mercury calculator to help you judge how much poison you're actually consuming...
